Because the night should  be dark.

For billions of years, the regular cadence of day to night and back proceeded naturally - day, night... light, dark - and back again. At night, there was only darkness - the Moon's light casting a mere 0.1 lux of light into the sky at peak 'brightness' when full, and even less at partial phases.

And yet, within the last few decades, there are almost no places left on Earth where humans live that artificial light does not significantly alter this previous rhythm. This has harmed human sleep and health, not to mention the wider ecosystem in myriad ways.

We can, and must, do better. Learn how, and join our fight against intrusive artificial light at night and how we can better protect the natural nighttime environment not just for our own health and well-being, but for that of nature all around us too.
THE STORY OF NIGHT

Darker Nights are Necessary

One of the wonders of the modern world is the ability to create artificial light. At the same time, our ability to produce more of it, every more inexpensively, has come at a cost: That of not only our need for darkness for restful sleep, but the entire ecosystem of creatures and plants around us that need darkness too.
Did you know? Fully 60% of animals are nocturnal. These animals actually require darkness to live and thrive - and we, as the beneficiaries of plant and animal foods at the top of the food chain, need that system to remain in proper working order. We have, instead, disrupted it with too much artificial light.

Improving night. Improving health.

The yin and yang symbol of eastern culture is a perfect representation of what life needs - balance. And in thinking of day and night in that regard, we need not only sufficient brightness in the day to produce the necessary hormones to be alert and awake, we also need sufficient darkness and lack of certain wavelengths of light in order for our sleeping hormones to be fully present. Even low levels of light harm our ability to sleep - and when sleep is compromised, so is our ability to have a healthy body and immune system.
