Because the night should be dark.
For billions of years, the regular cadence of day to night and back proceeded naturally - day, night... light, dark - and back again. At night, there was only darkness - the Moon's light casting a mere 0.1 lux of light into the sky at peak 'brightness' when full, and even less at partial phases.
And yet, within the last few decades, there are almost no places left on Earth where humans live that artificial light does not significantly alter this previous rhythm. This has harmed human sleep and health, not to mention the wider ecosystem in myriad ways. We can, and must, do better. Learn how, and join our fight against intrusive artificial light at night and how we can better protect the natural nighttime environment not just for our own health and well-being, but for that of nature all around us too. |
